FAQ: Language Assessment Tests

What is a Language Assessment Test?

Language Assessment Tests are used to assess your familiarity and competency in a language. Based on the results, you will be placed at the appropriate level. These tests always have a written component and may have an oral component.

Who should complete Language Assessment Tests?

Different departments have different requirements. However, if the department offers language tests, you should usually take one if you have had any prior exposure to the language which you intend to study. For more specific information, go to the department website (for a list of department websites, go to the Languages page).

When should Language Assessment Tests be completed by?

If they are required, you should complete the language assessment test before enrolling and, ideally, as early as possible. If completed later, there is no penalty but you may end up having to change courses.

Can I challenge the results of Language Assessment Tests?

Language Assessment tests are final and cannot be petitioned.

What happens if I do not take a Language Assessment Test?

Each department has its own policy. Please refer to the department websites or contact them directly.
